Therapy Intensives in Idaho | Trauma & Couples Care

Typically, therapy sessions are one hour, once a week. However, the frequency or duration of these sessions can change depending on the client’s needs. Some clients call and ask about biweekly therapy or even monthly therapy, but what about clients that need more? What about the clients that don’t feel as if one hour once a week is enough? Or what about those that are having a hard time committing to a regularly scheduled, ongoing appointment but know they need some help? For these reasons and more, therapy intensives may be the way to go.

A therapy intensive is a focused form of therapy that takes place over extended sessions—often several hours a day, over one or multiple days. Therapy intensives allow clients and therapists to work more deeply and efficiently on specific concerns without the interruptions that can occur between weekly sessions. Intensives are often used for trauma work, relationship repair, or situations where clients feel “stuck” in traditional therapy. Because there is more time in each session, therapists can move at a thoughtful, supportive pace while helping clients gain insight, process experiences, and develop meaningful change in a shorter period of time.

Who can benefit from therapy intensives? At Brown Counseling Services in Meridian, Idaho, we offer two different types of intensives. We have found that both couples counseling and trauma-focused care are therapeutic services that can be difficult to fit into a traditional 50-minute session. Those facing major life transitions, relationship ruptures, high-conflict relationships, or chronic, unresolved trauma can sometimes have deeper patterns and experiences that benefit from extended, focused time. Therapy intensives allow for meaningful progress by creating space to slow down, explore underlying issues, and support healing in a more comprehensive and intentional way.

Each intensive has a slightly different focus depending on the client’s needs. For our Couples Therapy Intensives, we tend to focus on breaking negative cycles, improving communication, and rebuilding trust and emotional safety. The time together is private, structured, and intentional, allowing couples to do deeper work without the time pressure of a traditional session. Our therapist uses a variety of approaches, including the Gottman Method and Relational Life Therapy techniques. (Brown Counseling Services)

Our EMDR Intensives typically utilize Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). EMDR is a therapy approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing or stuck memories so they no longer feel overwhelming in the present. While you briefly focus on parts of a difficult experience, your therapist guides you through gentle bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping), which supports the brain’s natural healing process. Over time, the memory becomes less emotionally charged, allowing you to think about it without feeling reactivated or distressed. (Brown Counseling Services)

IFS is a therapy approach that helps people understand and heal the different “parts” of themselves, such as parts that protect, parts that feel hurt, or parts that hold strong emotions. By building awareness and compassion for these parts, IFS helps people reduce inner conflict, heal past wounds, and feel more balanced and confident in their choices.

Having extended time for EMDR, IFS, and couples work allows for thorough preparation, deeper processing, and proper integration without feeling rushed. Clients can move through multiple phases of therapy in a single day while also having time for grounding, breaks, and stabilization. This continuity helps reduce disruption between sessions and can lead to more efficient and meaningful progress.

So what does a therapy intensive look like? See the steps below.

Comprehensive Assessment
We begin with a thorough review of your history, current concerns, and goals to ensure that an intensive is the right approach for you. This also helps us identify the specific areas to focus on.

Extended Therapy Session
EMDR:
Throughout the day, we focus on skills and tools to help you feel safe, grounded, and supported—both during the intensive and beyond.
COUPLES: Couples engage in multiple hours of guided therapy, giving you ample time to explore relationship patterns, improve communication, and practice new ways of relating to each other.

Strategies and Skills
EMDR:
Time is built into the intensive to reflect, settle your nervous system, and integrate any insights or shifts that arise, ensuring that the changes feel more sustainable and lasting.
COUPLES: You’ll learn practical tools to manage conflict, express your needs more clearly, and stay emotionally grounded during difficult conversations, helping you create healthier patterns moving forward.

Integration, Reflection, and Stabilization
EMDR:
A follow-up session provides space to check in, address any questions, and support continued integration as you move forward after the intensive.
COUPLES: Built-in reflection time allows you and your partner to pause, digest insights, and integrate the changes in a way that feels lasting and sustainable.

So why choose a therapy intensive?

Therapy intensives help you break through emotional roadblocks. Spending extended time together allows us to focus solely on what’s keeping you stuck, so you can move forward more efficiently.

By spending more time in session, many clients experience greater emotional relief and clarity. Patterns and emotions that once felt overwhelming often become clearer, helping you understand and navigate them with more confidence. Because intensives provide sustained therapeutic presence, they are especially effective for attachment wounds, trauma, relationship challenges, and complex emotional patterns.

Therapy intensives also offer a structured environment where time is specifically set aside for healing. Without the distractions of everyday life or long gaps between sessions, clients have uninterrupted space to focus on themselves or their relationship. This protected time reduces avoidance and loss of momentum and allows clients to stay engaged with the work as difficult emotions arise.

Each therapy intensive is personalized to meet clients where they are. We work together at a pace that feels supportive and responsive, ensuring the experience is aligned with individual needs and goals. With extended, uninterrupted time, clients can identify core issues, process emotions in real time, and experience meaningful breakthroughs that might otherwise take months in weekly therapy. Many clients seeking therapy intensives in Meridian, Idaho choose this format for faster, more noticeable change.

Sometimes, deeper healing requires more than weekly sessions. Therapy intensives offer focused, trauma-informed support for individuals and couples who are ready to engage in meaningful, sustained work. When challenges feel stuck, overwhelming, or time-sensitive, an intensive can provide the structure and depth needed to create real change.
